There are so many vegetables out there, with so many options. However, when it comes to naming them, there aren’t as many that come to mind. At least if we think about naming them alphabetically. So, today we will look at vegetables that start with Z.

If I ask you right now to name the vegetables starting with Z, how many can you come up with? Not a lot right? I was surprised too as I could only come up with 2 at max.

1. Zucchini

The first vegetable that comes to mind is Zucchini. Zucchinis are green or yellow in color and are a member of the squash family. It is available throughout the year and is readily available in all parts of the world.

They look like cucumbers, have soft edible seeds, and are used in both sweet and savory dishes. Zucchini is popular in most cuisines and is served steamed, boiled, baked, fried, and grilled.

They are also consumed raw in salads. Zucchinis are also used in baked goods like bread and zucchini muffins. It is also cooked with onions, eggplant, peppers, and tomatoes to make ratatouille.

Zucchini is a rich source of dietary fiber, vitamins, and potassium. You can make tons of dishes with it like zucchini noodles (also called zoodles), zucchini cannelloni, pizza, zucchini brownies, and vegan soups. Because the vegetable is basic in flavor, it is used in both desserts and savory dishes.

Zea Mays is the scientific name of corn. It’s also called milho in some parts of the world. It is a popular crop and staple food of more than half of the countries worldwide.

There are different kinds of Zea mays like flour corn, sweet corn, pod corn, and flint corn. It is used to make corn flour, popcorn, and sweet corn which is used in many recipes like salads.

Corns are served boiled, grilled, steamed, and roasted. They are mostly used in soups, salads, porridge, tacos, tortillas, and more. In Mexico, it is served as Elotes.

Zingiber Officinale is the scientific name of ginger or ginger root. The plant produces pale yellow flowers, with ginger roots. It is a popular spice that is used worldwide.

Ginger is a much-desired commodity because of its characteristic taste and aroma apart from its vast medicinal properties.

It can be eaten raw and is mostly used in all cuisines. Ginger is used in soups, stews, meat dishes, seafood, herbal tea, and pickles. It is known to cure sore throat and runny nose.

4. Zostera Marina

Zostera Marina is also called Eel Grass. It is edible raw and its stems have a sweet and crisp taste. It is a form of seaweed that is used in soups and stews.

This vegetable is popular in Asian cuisine. In Vietnam, eelgrass is considered a staple food and is served mostly with seafood.

5. Zizania Latifolia

The last vegetable that starts with Z is Ziziania Latifolia, also known as Manchurian wild rice. This vegetable is native to Asia. It is a delicacy in China because of its nutty flavor.

It is mostly sauteed with other vegetables and is also ground to make flour for baking. Zizania latifolia is rich in minerals, and vitamins and is low in fat. The seeds of the vegetable are used as rice in many salads and dishes.
