Orange Tofu Recipe – Delicious & Tasty

Are you a fan of orange chicken? If yes, then here’s a vegan version of it. Try out this easy orange tofu recipe to make a delicious tofu dish in no time.

This recipe is made with crispy pan-fried tofu tossed into sweet and tangy Asian-style orange sauce. This is a quick and easy recipe to make that is vegan and gluten-free. It is a healthier twist to the classic Chinese orange chicken recipe.

You can enjoy this dish with a side of jasmine rice, stir-fried vegetables, or garlic noodles.

Orange tofu is made from firm fried tofu blocks coated in a sweet orange sauce. It is healthier than its chicken version and completely vegan.

In this recipe, I’m going to use extra firm tofu. If you feel like your tofu is not firm and has water, you will need to drain it first.

To do that, wrap the tofu block in absorbent paper, and squeeze it between the kitchen counter and a chopping board. I recommend putting weight over the board and keeping it like that for 20-30 minutes.

Once the excess liquid is drained, you can cut them into small pieces, or pull it with your hand.

Key Ingredients

For Crispy Tofu

  • 1 pack of extra-firm tofu, but into small cubes
  • 3 tbsp cornstarch
  • 3 tbsp oil for frying

For Orange Sauce

To make the orange sauce, you are going to need:

  • 4 tsp orange zest
  • 4 garlic cloves, chopped into fine pieces
  • 2-inch ginger, finely chopped
  • 1 1/2 cup freshly squeezed orange juice
  • 4 tsp tamari (or soy sauce)
  • 3 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 4 tbsp coconut sugar (or brown sugar)
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch

Chef Notes

  • Use firm tofu to get crispy pieces. If your tofu has access liquid, you can press firmly to take the access out.
  • Make sure to coat cornstarch on tofu evenly to get a crispy exterior.
  • Make sure to cook each side of the tofu until golden brown and crispy.
  • Follow this recipe to make tofu taste like chicken before frying it in oil to give the dish more flavor.
  • Make sure the sauce is thick before you toss the fried tofu in. If your sauce is too light, it will all turn into mush. Make sure to thicken the sauce before tossing in tofu.
