How to Make Matcha Latte Without a Whisk in Canada

Wondering how to make matcha latte without a whisk? Well, the simple secret to making matcha without any tools, is to mix it by shaking!

Matcha has been trending in coffee shops in Canada for years now. Originating in China and Japan, matcha has found its way to the West and around the world in bakeries, cafes, and bars. There are various matcha-flavored condiments in Canada like matcha-flavored KitKats, donuts, cakes, and even cocktails.

I was a bit skeptical about making matcha latte at home because I always thought it needed fancy tools or that special whisk. However, after trying the recipe myself, matcha latte has become my favorite drink both in summer and winter.

If you have ever seen baristas making matcha, you must have seen them use a professional frother or a fancy-looking wooden whisk. It’s called a Chasen and it’s made from bamboo. Chasen helps make a smooth matcha mixture.

However, the small delicate-looking whisk is available on the market for around $20-$50, and honestly, it’s just not for me. Luckily, there is an easier and simpler way to make matcha without a whisk.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/2 tsp matcha
  • 1-3 tsp sweetener of choice

Instructions

  1. Pour milk into a large cup, and microwave on high for 1 minute.
  2. In the meantime, take a shaking container with a tight lid (like a mason jar) and add water with matcha. Shake for 10-15 seconds.
  3. Take out the milk, and add matcha.
  4. Add a sweetener of your choice, stir with a spoon, and enjoy!

Variations

I love to add spices to my matcha latte. Some spices that go great with matcha are ground cinnamon, ground ginger, and ground turmeric. Cardamon also gives a warm flavor to matcha. You can either add these to the boiling milk or water when dissolving matcha.

If it’s summer, and you want a matcha latte chiller like Starbucks in Canada, just have 1 cup of ice ready, and pour the matcha into your favorite container.

To achieve the same flavor as the Starbucks drink, add 1 tbsp of vanilla syrup to your drink and enjoy it cold.

Chef Notes

  • For this recipe, you can use any milk you want like cow milk, almond, coconut, and soy.
  • For sweeteners, you can use vanilla syrup, honey, agave, or simple sugar.
  • If you don’t have a jar lying around, you can put the ingredients into a thermos, and shake hard to make the matcha frothy.

Why Does Matcha Need to be Whisked?

Whisking matcha allows air into the mixture making it frothy. It also releases aromas, and essence into the mixture. So, it’s not just about dissolving matcha into the water, but about oxygenation to get the perfect flavor.

You don’t need a special matcha whisk for frothing the drink, as it also works great if you just shake the mixture in a tight jar.

Can you use a fork to whisk matcha?

You can use a fork to whisk matcha, but it’s a long method, much like making dalgona coffee with a spoon. What I recommend is taking a thermos, or any tight bottle, and shaking matcha and water for 20-30 seconds to achieve frothiness.

What syrup goes best with matcha?

Some of the favorite syrups that go best with matcha latte are vanilla, toffee nut, and honey blend. All of these are easily available in the Canadian local markets.

If you want the vanilla flavor, you can also opt for vanilla bean powder, rather than syrup. Starbucks also serves Matcha Lemonade – matcha served with cold and fresh lemonade.

If you are in a holiday spirit, you can add frappuccino syrup and whipped cream to matcha.
